Hartless is the only submersible captain who openly recruits crew and allows them to leave when they want. Because of that policy, Nemo has shunned him and Gustov would see him dead, but Thane has become the friend of sailors looking toward the future.

Hartless was likely an early ally of Nemo's. Because he and Nemo did not see eye to eye on the secrecy Nemo wished to keep surrounding his submarines, as Thane wished to maintain a more liberal policy regarding his crew, the two parted ways, and Slipstream went with Thane. Gustov, a hardline supporter of Nemo, likely sees Thane as a threat to the exclusivity of their technology, and thus a chink in their armor.
